Along with the house to the west (1404 East Market), this Queen Anne cottage was built in 1910 for Dr. Joseph Bird and his wife, Emma, as an investment. William and Maude Bauer purchased 1406 East Market in November 1922. Mr. Bauer was an official with Bocard Distributing Company, distributors of wholesale liquors, located on West Main Street in downtown New Albany. Mrs. Bauer remained in the home for several years following the death of her husband in March 1936.
