McCulloch-Schmitt House
1104 East Market Street
New Albany, IN 47150

Listing Description:
This home was built for attorney Edward McCulloch and his wife, Jennie, around 1898. The McCullochs owned all of the property from 11th Street east to the Morrison-Briggs house at 1118 East Market. After their marriage in October 1895, the couple lived in the house that once occupied the site where 1108 and 1110 East Market now stand. Mr. McCulloch was also the manager and editor of the New Albany Tribune. Mr. and Mrs. McCulloch lived in the home for about eight years, but retained ownership and used it as a rental until selling it in March 1921. The buyer, New Albany contractor David Collins, lived in the home briefly while constructing 1108 and 1110 East Market; he then moved into 1108. Helen Marquet was the next to purchase the home, in November 1922. Miss Marquet was betrothed to Charles Schmitt; they were married in April 1923 and took up housekeeping here. Mr. Schmitt would establish Schmitt Furniture Company in June 1936 and become its president and treasurer. The home has seen multiple owners since the Schmitts sold it in November 1942.
