Jacob Zinsmeister House
1420 East Market Street
New Albany, IN 47150

Listing Description:
This lot was purchased in February 1889 for $4500 by Jacob and Anna Zinsmeister. Their home was constructed that same year for $8000, in the fashionable Second Empire style. Jacob ZInsmeister and his brother, Frank, were partners in Jacob Zinsmeister & Bro., a wholesale grocery firm with one location on State Street in New Albany and a second in Louisville. In 1910 the business partnership dissoved. While Frank retained the New Albany location, Jacob purchased the Louisville store, and in 1916 he moved his family to Louisville as well. S. Otto Voyles purchased the house the following year, and the Voyles family retained ownership of the house until the death of his widow in 1962. Mr. Voyles was president of the Calumet Fertilizer Company, located on the west side of Silver Street south of the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks. The present front porch of the home replaced two smaller iron porches that were damaged by the 1937 Ohio River flood.
