George and Mary Borgerding House
1414 East Market Street
New Albany, IN 47150

Listing Description:
George and Mary Borgerding purchased this lot in February 1889 for $1500 from Jacob Zinsmeister, who lived next door. The Borgerdings' house was completed in the latter part of 1889. Mr. Borgerding, a bookkeeper, was involved with several New Albany manufacturing concerns. In 1893 he became cashier at the New Albany National Bank, remaining there until he was elected president of the Mutual Trust and Deposit Company in January 1919. Mrs. Borgerding met an untimely death in January 1922 as the result of a motor car accident, and her husband, who was driving when they struck a tree, was also injured. The Borgerdings' son, William and his wife, Susan, came to live in the house with George after his wife's death. George continued to work at Mutual Trust until his death in November 1937 at the age of 81. William Borgerding, who worked at the Indiana Veneer Company and the Crescent Paneling Company during his career, remained in the house until his death in 1964.
