William and Marie Schwaninger purchased this new home - built by David C. Collins - in February 1922. Mr. Schwaninger was secretary and manager of S.W. Newburger's White House Department Store, located at 222 Pearl Street in downtown New Albany. The photo below, from the collection of the Indiana Room of the New Albany-Floyd County Library, shows Mr. Schwaninger circa 1940. William died in January 1947 and the house stayed in the Schwaninger family until the death of Mrs. Schwaninger in December 1952.
