David C. Collins House
1108 East Market Street
New Albany, IN 47150

Listing Description:
Both 1108 and 1110 East Market were constructed in 1922 by New Albany contractor David C. Collins. Both were built on the site of a double house torn down to make way for these modern homes. Major General Edward M. Lewis of the United States Army was born in the original house, in 1863. Major General Lewis - who saw action in the Spanish American War, Philippines Insurrection, and World War I - was not only decorated by his own country, but received numerous honors from abroad. David Collins resided in this home after its construction, until about 1930. He then sold the home to Walter and Jennie Leach. Mr. Leach was an oculist, with an office in the Elsby Building downtown. He passed in September 1935, and his widow remained in the home until the mid-1940s. The house then became the residence of real estate agent Wilbur Loftus and his wife, Fairy. The Loftuses lived here through the early 1960s, when they purchased the historic Charles and Anna Moser Tighe House at 1801 DePauw Avenue.
