Judge Alexander Dowling House
1217 East Spring Street
New Albany, IN 47150

Listing Description:
Alexander Dowling, Esq. had this house built in 1870. The builders were likely William and James Banes, who were responsible for erecting many of New Albany's finest residences of the period, including the William S. Culbertson mansion and the Shipman-McCord House on East Main Street. With the death of Judge Dowling in December 1917, the house became home to the Edward Jackson family and remained so until 1936. Mr. Jackson was proprietor of the E. E. Jackson Saloon, located on West Main Street in downtown New Albany. He later ran the bowling lanes in the historic Opera House at the northeast corner of Spring and Pearl streets. By 1937, Mullineaux Funeral Home was occupying the structure, and it has remained a funeral home ever since.
