DuPaquier-Schwartzel House
1117 East Spring Street
New Albany, IN 47150

Listing Description:
Emile DuPaquier, general agent for the Equitable Life Insurance Co. of Des Moines, Iowa, had this house built in 1910. In July 1913, Joseph C. Schwartzel and his wife Catherine purchased the home. Mr. Schwartzel was secretary, treasurer, and later president of the New Albany Box and Basket Company, a New Albany industry that remained in business for over 100 years. Joseph passed away in July 1944, but the home remained in the Schwartzel family until April 1950. Dr. Nelson Wolfe located his medical office here at that time, and remained here through the mid-1960s. The house was then converted to a two-unit apartment dwelling, and later was home to a microcomputer company, before being converted back to a single-family dwelling.  The photo below shows the home in 1973.
