Phoenix Carriage Factory
26 East 3rd Street
New Albany, IN 47150

Listing Description:
It appears as if this building was constructed for Lewis Hans shortly after the printing of the 1865 New Albany City Directory. Hans had his Phoenix Carriage Factory here, which was later known as the Lewis Hans Carriage Manufacturing Company.

By the turn of the 20th century, the building was home to the Hoosier Dye Works and Manufacturing Company, with John M. Scott serving as superintendent. The dye works went out of business by 1923, and the building remained vacant until mid- to late-1925, when Star Cleaners opened here. Star Cleaners remained in operation for almost a century - wholly or partially owned by the Ehalt family the entire tme - offering laundry and dry cleaning services until the business's closure in March 2021.
