Harmeling-Newhouse House

Listing Description:
Fredericka Harmeling, widow of Henry, purchased this lot for $800 in 1889 and had this home built shortly thereafter. Along with her son, Henry G., she made her home here for only three years. Mr. Harmeling was partners with Frederick Maetschke, located at the corner of East Spring and Bank streets in downtown New Albany. Mrs. Harmeling sold the property to John Newhouse for $2700 in 1892, and the Newhouse family lived here for 12 years. Mr. Newhouse was associated with several railroads during his career as a master mechanic, including the Monon and the K & I. After numerous owners and occupants through the years, the home was vacant and deteriorated before being rehabilitated in 2011-12 as part of the Midtown Renaissance project.
