Walter A. Gadient House
1212 East Main Street
New Albany, IN 47150

Listing Description:
Walter A. Gadient purchased this lot in March 1914 from the administrators of the Washington C. DePauw estate, for $1,750. The house was constructed immediately, likely by the noted builders of the day, S. Day and Sons of New Albany. Mr. Gadient was the secretary of the New Albany Trust Company and later vice-president and trust officer of the Union National Bank of New Albany. He and his wife, Elsa M., continued residency here until their new home was completed at 1919 DePauw Avenue around 1925.

The house was sold to Augustus B. Jahnel, an engraver, in August 1925. Mr. Jahnel died in the mid-1940s and his widow, Barbara S., remained in the house until April 1953. Burkhard J. and Agnes G. Schmitt were the next owners of the property. Mr. Schmitt was a salesman for the old Ben Snyder Department Store in Louisville. Mrs. Schmitt continued to reside in the home, even after the passing of her husband in the mid-1970s. She moved from the residence shortly before her death in April 1987.
