Public Hearing on Proposed National Register District Friday December 8, 2023 The Northside Historic District is being nominated to the National Register of Historic Places because of the important role that the businesses located here played in the development of the community, as well as the architectural value of the buildings. Three primary structures are included in the nomination: the National Stove Works / Anchor Stove building at 300 Culbertson Avenue (built and expanded from c.1880-1920), the New Albany Gas & Light Company Building at 627 East 4th Street (1891) and the Day Leather Company / E.M. Cummings Veneer Building at 601 East 4th Street (c.1895/1928).
The Historic Preservation Commission will hold a public hearing on the proposed nomination at 7 PM on Wednesday, 20 December 2023 as part of its regular monthly meeting. The meeting will held in the Council Chambers at New Albany City Hall, 142 East Main Street. Interested parties and the general public are welcome to attend and to voice an opinion about the proposed nomination.
The National Register of Historic Places is the official list - administered by the National Park Service - of sites, buildings, structures, districts and objects important to our history. National Register designation is primarily honorary and does not place any restrictions on property owners; however, listing does qualify owners to utilize rehabilitation tax credits to help offset qualified rehab costs.
