Civil War-era duplex available for relocation

This double house, located at 412-414 East 9th Street, appears to have been built circa 1860 for investment purposes for Russell Smith. Smith sold the property in July 1886 to the Franck family, and it remained in their possession until about 1920.

The exterior of the house is in need of repairs but retains much of its historic character, including original clapboard siding and six-over-six and four-over-four windows. The nicely detailed, Craftsman-style porch was added around 1920, as were the multi-light front doors. The photo below, taken about 1970, shows the porch before it was enclosed.

The duplex offers about 1545 square feet of living space total, including one bedroom and one bathroom in each unit as currently configured. Original, simple woodwork and four-panel doors are found throughout, with some hardwood floors exposed. The south parlor includes a fireplace with a Classical-inspired wooden mantel and a vintage light fixture, while the north unit has French doors dividing the front two rooms. Other features include built-in cabinetry and a clawfoot bathtub. The second level, accessible via an enclosed staircase in the south unit, was used as additional living space.
