Historic house available for relocation
Tuesday December 3, 2024

The shotgun-style at house at 611 East Market Street in downtown New Albany is being offered free to a new owner who is willing to relocate the structure. St. Elizabeth Catholic Charities is planning on demolishing the house for future development on the lot and received approval from the city’s Historic Preservation Commission for that demolition in November. However, because the house is historic and contributes to the character of the East Spring Street Historic District, St. Elizabeth and the New Albany HPC are working together to seek a new owner to move and rehabilitate the structure. The new owner would be responsible for all relocation costs.

The house, which is believed to have been constructed circa 1880, is a single-story, frame structure with about 884 square feet, including a 14’ x 22’ kitchen addition that would likely need to be removed prior to any move. The enclosed, brick front porch is likely a later addition – perhaps after the 1937 flood. The house features tall ceilings, original woodwork and hardwood floors.

St. Elizabeth is allowing until January 20 for a commitment in writing from a party wishing to move the house, with an additional 60 days (March 20) to complete the move. Relocation within the East Spring Street Historic District would require approval from the Historic Preservation Commission of the new site, as well as conformance with any applicable zoning regulations.

For more information or to schedule a time to inspect the property, please contact Mark Casper at 812/949-7305.
