This home was built around 1890 and used as rental property by owner Harriet LaFollette. The early tenants of the house are unknown until 1905, and for the next 4 years, when the structure was home to Josephine Merker, the widow of Henry.
 
The house was sold to John P. Maguire for $1600 in August 1909, and would remain in the family for almost 50 years.  His mother, Johanna, and sister, Margaret, would also come to live in the house. John, a bachelor, was an engineer for the Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville Railway Co., later to be known as the Monon, the Hoosier Line. Margaret, a spinster, was associated with the New Albany Hosiery Mill located on Ekin Avenue in New Albany. Mrs. Maguire died in October 1911 at the age of 63 years and in March 1931, at the age of 57, Margaret expired.
 
By the late 1930s, John’s brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Mary, were living in the house with him. Thomas was also a Monon Railroad employee where he served as its flagman at the Ekin Avenue and Fifteenth Street crossing. In July 1941, Thomas died at the age of 63 and Mary remained in the home until her death in March 1955.  Less than three years later, John passed away at the age of 75, ending the lengthy tenure of residency for the Maguire family.
