Arthur F. Hegewald House
1002 East Elm Street
New Albany, IN 47150

Listing Description:
Arthur F. Hegewald purchased this property from Elizabeth Murray in December 1899, for $1200. The c.1860 structure that stood here at the time had been home to the Richard C. Murphy family. A furious fire in February 1901 caused extensive damage to the house. The damaged structure was either torn down or incorporated into the present house. Arthur Hegewald and Beulah Spence was married in May 1891 and had previously resided on Bank Street before buying the Elm Street property. Mr. Hegewald was treasurer of the Charles Hegewald Company - located on Water Street in downtown New Albany - which included boilermaking, machine shops and a foundry. According to an 1897 newspaper account, Arthur was granted a patent on a manhole cover that was manufactured at the family company. Mr. Hegewald died in October 1929 at age 62 and his widow, Beulah, remained in the house until her death in October 1950. After her death, the Hegewalds' son, Arthur Jr., and his wife Janice took up residency in the home. A.F., as he was known, was owner and operator of Hegewald Heating Service in New Albany. The Hegewalds raised their family here and remained until moving to Indianapolis in 1988, ending almost 90 years of Hegewald ownership.
