Prior to the construction of the Farmers Market pavillion and its associated parking, the south end of this lot was occupied by First Presbyterian Church. Several two-story frame commercial buildings filled the north end of the lot, facing Market Street.
The Presbyterians were the first to establish a congregation in New Albany, in 1816. This church was built in 1854 and rebuilt after being heavily damaged in a 1898 fire. In 1969, the church merged with Hutchison Memorial Presbyterian Church to become St. John United Presbyterian, relocating to Hutchison's church building at 13th and Elm Streets. The photos below are from the collection of the Indiana History Room of the Floyd County Library. The black and white image is from 1913, showing the shortened steeple after the fire. The color photo - which shows both the church and its Sunday School building - dates to 1973, shortly before demolition.
