Knoefel-Lofton House
1103 East Main Street
New Albany, IN 47150

Listing Description:
This brick, Queen Anne-style home was built in 1896 for druggist Charles D. Knoefel and his wife, Mary. The cost of construction was $3787, along with $1750 for the lot. Mr. Knoefel was proprietor of Knoefel Drug Store and president of the New Albany Trust Company.

Charles and Margaret Schwartzel purchased the house from the Knoefels in 1926. Mr. Schwartzel was president of the New Albany Box and Basket Company and a director of the Mutual Trust and Deposit Co. Their son-in-law, Isadore Marguet, also resided with them, since his wife had died in 1915. Charles passed in May 1932 and Margaret in May 1934.

The house remained in the Schwartzel-Marguet family until the mid-1940s. By 1949, a gas station had been attached to the 11th Street side of the home. It wasn't until 1979, when Harry and June Lofton bought the house, that the gas station was removed and the home began to be restored to its original grandeur.
