George and Ada Graves purchased this lot in December 1907 and had this American Foursquare-style home built immediately. Mr. Graves was a bookkeeper for the Anchor Stove & Range Company, located on Culbertson Avenue in downtown New Albany. Mrs. Graves passed away in December 1936 at the age of 79, with Mr. Graves following one month later.

Irma Hammond, widow of James M. Hammond, purchased the home after the death of the Graves, and lived here until she passed away in August 1974. Mrs. Hammond was New Albany's first female City Clerk.
