Expansion of E. Spring Street National Register district announced

The National Park Service has listed the expansion of the East Spring Street Historic District in the National Register of Historic Places, the official list of sites, buildings, structures, districts and objects important to our nation’s history. With the expansion - which was approved on December 2, 2020 - the National Register-listed district now covers an area roughly bounded by East 5th Street, East Elm Street, Vincennes Street and East Market Street. This expansion does not change the boundaries of the locally-designated district under the jurisdiction of the New Albany Historic Preservation Commission.

Neighborhood residents initiated the expansion, with support from the City of New Albany and Indiana Landmarks. Preservation consultant Camille Fife of Madison, Indiana completed the nomination, which has been underway for some time. The National Register of Historic Places is a federal program administered in Indiana by the Department of Natural Resources, Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology in coordination with the National Park Service. There are about 300 districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Indiana today.

The National Register designation will provide a prestigious recognition for the neighborhood, promote tourism and economic development, and provide eligibility for financial incentives to assist with the rehabilitation of contributing buildings. The listing will place no additional restrictions on property owners within the district, but may qualify them for tax credits to help recoup some of the cost of qualified rehabilitation projects.
