Joseph & Emma Norton House
1102 East Main Street
New Albany, IN 47150

Listing Description:
This home was constructed around 1922, replacing an earlier, two-story frame dwelling that had stood on the site previously. It is not known why this took place, but the vacant lot to the east was also sold at about the same time this house was being constructed. The builder of this home may have been the prominent New Albany firm of S. Day & Sons. There are at least three other homes in the 1100 block of East Main Street that are documented Day-builts, including the William P. Stein House, built in 1923, next door at 1104.
Joseph and Emma Norton were residing at this location, in the prior house, by March 1898. They continued to live here in this bungalow until shortly after the death of Mr. Norton in November 1946. Joseph had been a trainman for 40 years for the Southern Railway Company and passed at the age of 63. Mrs. Norton moved from the home in the late 1940s and expired in April 1969 in Daytona Beach, Florida.
