Expansion of East Spring Street National Register district to be discussed

The New Albany Historic Preservation Commission will host a public information session regarding the proposed expansion of the East Spring Street National Register historic district. The meeting will be held Thursday, September 26 at 6:30 PM, in the gym at St. John Presbyterian Church, 1307 East Elm Street, New Albany. Attendees will learn about the National Register and what that listing would mean, and have the opportunity to offer comments and ask questions.

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list - administered by the National Park Service - of sites, buildings, structures, districts and objects important to our history. National Register designation is primarily honorary and does not place any restrictions on property owners within the district; however, it would qualify those owners to use rehabilitation tax credits to help offset qualified rehabilitation costs.

A portion of the East Spring Street neighborhood – roughly including Spring Street and the north side of Market Street, between East 5^th and East 11^th – was listed in the National Register in 2002. The proposed expansion would extend the district to the north, to include Elm Street, to the east to Vincennes Street, and to the west to abut the New Albany Downtown Historic District. The proposed expansion would not impact the boundaries of the locally-designated East Spring Street historic district, in which exterior alterations, new construction and demolition are subject to review by the Preservation Commission.

Property owners and residents within the proposed expansion area are encouraged to attend the meeting, to learn more about the National Register and get answers to any questions they may have. That meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 18 at 7 PM, in the Assembly Room on the third floor of the City-County Building (311 Hauss Square).
