The 2012-2013 workshop series Hands on History is here! The popular educational series is designed to give participants an in-depth look at various preservation issues and methods of maintaining and preserving older buildings. Participants will learn practical, hands-on techniques for working with original materials and finishes to maintain, restore and preserve historic elements such as plaster, windows and stained glass. Topics such as local preservation districts will be discussed and how to plan your own DIY restoration project will also be explored. Programs are presented with support from The Brown-Forman Corporation.

• Workshops will be held on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 1-4 pm, September through April at the Brennan House, 631 South 5th Street

Hands on History 2012-2013 schedule

September 8th -- It's All About Plaster
This workshop will focus on how to repair and maintain flat plaster, including walls and ceilings, as well as ornamental plaster suffering from problems like cracks, water damage, and mold issues.

October 13th -- Windows I
October's workshop offers an introduction to the maintenance of historic windows, an understanding of the anatomy of a window, and the value of preserving your home's historic windows.

November 10th -- Stained Glass
If the stained glass in your older home or church suffers from cracks, faded color, or corroded cames let Hands on History teach you how to preserve it properly and keep your stained glass looking as beautiful as when it was first made.

December 8th -- Masonry: Paving and Pointing
Join us for a workshop concerning the proper techniques and procedures involved in caring for and maintaining your historic home's masonry.

January 12th -- Landmarks 101: Louisville's Historic Preservation Districts
This workshop will highlight and discuss the benefits and guidelines of the prominent historic landmarks in the city and their importance to the community.

February 9th -- Planning your Restoration Project
Let Hands on History help you plan your next restoration project with information concerning where to begin, what materials to use and what local specialists to turn to.

March 9th -- DIY Preservation
Join us for an introduction to new restoration techniques and projects that can aid you in all steps of your "do it yourself" preservation project.

April 13th -- Windows II
If you know anything about windows or have attended our window workshop in the past, join us for a more advanced hands on experience with the preservation of historic windows.

May 11th -- Preservation FEST
Join us for an interactive event including educational sessions, guest speakers, and a vendor fair to learn how to maintain and care for you historic home or commercial building.
